Wrexham Leads the UK in Smart City Innovation with VZTA Digital Screens
Wrexham has become the first UK council to equip nearly 100 city centre businesses with real-time, on-demand digital advertising, marking a significant milestone in the city’s digital transformation journey.
Through a collaborative partnership with VZTA Smart Towns—the UK’s leading TownTech platform developed by Wales-based NearMeNow—businesses can now instantly update content across Wrexham’s high street digital screens. This initiative allows local enterprises to advertise promotions, fill last-minute appointments, and reduce stock waste at no cost, leveling the digital playing field for independent retailers.
The innovative project is supported by the Welsh Government’s Transforming Towns programme and builds upon the success of the VZTA Wrexham app, launched last year. It represents a significant step toward achieving Wrexham’s ambition to become a fully connected Smart City.
Integrating Innovation with Local Empowerment
The VZTA Digital Screens Software offers a unified platform combining digital advertising, wayfinding, and app-based promotions. Developed by NearMeNow, the software is designed with accessibility and ease-of-use in mind, aiming to bring the benefits of Smart Town technology to all communities.
Victoria Mann, CEO of NearMeNow, commented:
“Wrexham truly embodies the VZTA ethos of ‘one city; one solution.’ Our digital screens and app combo represent a major step forward in the digital transformation of town and city centres—not just in terms of technology, but in how we empower small businesses.”
“With real-time ad updates and no cost to the businesses, they can engage with customers on their own terms, not when social media algorithms decide.”
Leadership Driving Smart Growth
Wrexham’s pioneering approach includes the appointment of the first Smart Towns Development Manager in Wales. Under David Evans’ leadership, the council has worked closely with the VZTA team to co-develop a tailored digital ecosystem for local businesses.
David Evans, Smart Towns Manager, said:
“This project is not just about technology; it’s about creating opportunities for businesses and fostering a vibrant, connected community. The VZTA team has shown their commitment to regeneration, helping local economies thrive.”
Councillor Nigel Williams, Lead Member for Economy, Business, and Tourism, added:
“I am proud to say that Wrexham Council is the first to offer free advertising via our newly installed digital boards. This initiative provides our city centre businesses with a powerful tool to promote offers and raise their profile.”
“Thanks to the VZTA team and the Welsh Government’s Transforming Towns grant funding for helping us lead the way in becoming a truly ‘smart city.’”
A Model for the UK
As part of Wrexham’s 2029 Vision, the rollout of this digital solution underscores the city’s role as a national leader in digital regeneration. From hosting the UK’s first Smart Towns Conference to pioneering hyperlocal tech partnerships, Wrexham continues to set the pace for future-ready urban development.
