What Does the UK’s First Business-Only 5G+ Network Slice Mean for Wales?
VodafoneThree’s Casey Cucciniello has highlighted the growing importance of reliable mobile connectivity for public services, businesses and digital workforces across Wales, following the launch of Vodafone Business’ new enterprise-grade mobile connectivity portfolio.
Cucciniello, Head of Public Sector Engagement (Wales) at VodafoneThree, said the significance of the technology lies not simply in the network itself, but in what stronger and more reliable connectivity can enable for organisations increasingly dependent on digital services.
His comments follow the launch of Vodafone SuperMobile for Business, which is anchored by what Vodafone Business says is the UK’s first national, business-only 5G+ mobile network slice.
Writing on LinkedIn following the announcement, Cucciniello said:
“But for me, the real story isn’t the technology itself. It’s what that technology enables.”
Why connectivity matters for organisations across Wales
Across Wales, Cucciniello pointed to organisations increasingly delivering critical services through digital platforms, equipping mobile workforces with real-time data and making greater use of technologies including data, AI and automation.
As those services become more digital, he said reliable connectivity becomes increasingly important.
He highlighted a number of examples where dependable mobile connectivity can play an important role, including a community nurse accessing patient information in the field, a highways team responding to an incident, a social worker supporting vulnerable families, a business operating from a rural part of Wales and a university supporting research and innovation.
Cucciniello said these organisations all depend on connectivity being available when it matters most.
Dedicated capacity for business customers
Vodafone Business’ new National Business Slice reserves dedicated 5G+ capacity for enterprise customers, separating business traffic from consumer demand.
According to Vodafone Business, organisations using the service can benefit from speeds of up to four times faster than standard plans and a minimum download speed of 15Mbps, subject to relevant coverage, compatible plans and devices, and applicable service terms and conditions.
The service is designed to provide dedicated capacity, assured performance and committed performance targets, including in high-demand locations.
It is intended to support workflows including real-time reporting, video collaboration, field operations and data-intensive applications, and works directly with many standard compatible business handsets.
Supporting increasingly digital services
Cucciniello said the launch demonstrates how VodafoneThree is using the scale and strength of its combined network to support public services, communities and businesses.
He also highlighted the wider potential of being able to tailor network performance around the needs of different organisations, from everyday business operations through to mission-critical public services and critical national infrastructure.
Vodafone Business is already working with several organisations to assess how Vodafone SuperMobile for Business can support mobile workforces, operational requirements and customer experience.
These include British Airways, Cadent Gas, Centrica, Co-op Live, Manchester Airports Group, Loganair, TATA Steel and UK Power Networks.

Further network slicing planned for critical services
Vodafone Business will also launch a dedicated National Critical Slice for blue light organisations and critical public services next year.
Built on VodafoneThree’s 5G Standalone network, the service is intended to provide priority connectivity and assured performance for first responders and other organisations delivering mission-critical services.
The National Business Slice forms part of VodafoneThree’s combined network and the company’s £11bn commitment to build the UK’s best network over the next decade.
For Wales, Cucciniello’s comments underline a broader point behind the launch: as businesses, public services and communities become more reliant on digital tools, the connectivity supporting them is becoming increasingly important to how those organisations operate.
