Welsh Startups Invited to Collaborate with MIT in Unique Innovation Mission
A unique opportunity has opened for Welsh entrepreneurs to collaborate with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), one of the world’s most prestigious technical institutions.
Backed by the Welsh Government and facilitated by TownSq, the week-long trade mission will take place from 16–22 November in Boston. Participants will gain access to MIT’s Industrial Liaison Program — a network traditionally reserved for blue-chip companies and global industrial partners including Mitsubishi, BT, and Apple.
The visit will include attendance at MIT’s annual R&D conference, a curated tour of the MIT campus, and networking opportunities with local innovators and entrepreneurs from the Greater Boston area.
Despite its low profile, Wales holds a long-standing relationship with MIT through this programme, offering Welsh businesses the chance to engage directly with the university’s renowned research, events, and entrepreneurial ecosystem.
Gareth Jones, CEO of TownSq and Business in Wales columnist, has previously participated in the Boston trade mission. Reflecting on the value of the initiative, he commented:
“The relationship between Wales and MIT is a real hidden gem and one we’ve not made the most of in the past few years. MIT has spent 80 years leading on innovation; Research and development is a philosophy there, it’s unavoidable and for Welsh businesses to have the chance to soak up that culture is an important step to creating our own national innovation culture.”
“It really can’t be overstated what an opportunity this is. They live and breathe innovation at MIT, it’s simply part of the culture. I know from previous trips how much I personally have learned and it’s fantastic to be able to bring some of the brightest Welsh businesses to see what seeds can be sewn, and what opportunities we can develop to grow the innovation culture here in Wales.”
Applications are now open for Welsh startups and SMEs eager to take part in the November mission. With only a limited number of spaces available, interested businesses are encouraged to apply before the 30th September deadline.
