Welsh Fintech Go.Compare Fuels Growth of Women’s Rugby in North Wales

Go.Compare’s “Making a Difference” campaign showcases how fintech can drive community impact through grassroots sport

Wrexham RFC’s thriving girls’ rugby programme has been recognised through Go.Compare’s Making a Difference campaign — a UK-wide initiative aimed at celebrating grassroots rugby and the dedicated individuals who help it flourish.

The campaign, created in partnership with The Telegraph, recognised unsung rugby heroes across England, Wales and Scotland, with more than 800 entries received. Among the three national winners was David Dixon of Wrexham RFC, whose commitment to the club’s under-10s girls team earned him and the club the Welsh accolade and a £5,000 prize.

Go.Compare — a leading Welsh fintech and back-of-shirt sponsor for the Welsh Rugby Union — is committed to supporting community-based initiatives as part of its wider social impact strategy. Through Making a Difference, the company demonstrates how fintech can be a force for good, investing in local talent and promoting inclusion across Wales.

As part of the award, several of Wrexham’s older girls were invited to the Welsh Rugby Union’s National Centre of Excellence near Cardiff for a high-performance training experience. The day included access to elite facilities and skill sessions led by Wales internationals Alex Callender, Kayleigh Powell and Sisilia Tuipulotu.

The young players, who are part of Wrexham RFC’s all-girls Valkyries programme, described the day as inspirational. The club’s women’s section, formed just seven years ago, now boasts around 80 female members and continues to grow its reputation in North Wales. Last season, its under-16s reached the final of the National Wales Cup for the first time.

Wales player Kayleigh Powell, reflecting on the importance of grassroots support, said: “We have to have that base where people are participating first and then to be able to develop. With us being professional now, it gives people a dream.”

Go.Compare’s campaign, and its broader partnership with the WRU, shows how fintech brands can make a tangible difference in local communities. By celebrating individuals like David Dixon and supporting clubs like Wrexham RFC, the company is helping to ensure that opportunities in sport are open to all.
