Welsh Businesses Can Now Access 75% Funding for AI Skills Training Through the Flexible Skills Programme

Welsh businesses have a new, significant opportunity to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) into their operations, backed by a £2.1 million funding package from the Welsh Government.
This programme is designed to enhance productivity, innovation, and competitiveness across the country. A central feature of this support is a new pilot scheme that increases the government’s financial contribution to AI skills training, delivered through the established Flexible Skills Programme.
Welsh businesses can now access 75% funding for AI skills training through certified providers such as Code Institute, helping employers upskill their workforce and accelerate responsible AI adoption.
Understanding the Flexible Skills Programme (FSP)
The Flexible Skills Programme (FSP) is a Welsh Government initiative created to help businesses invest in their workforce and build stronger, more skilled teams. Under the standard FSP arrangement, employers can apply for funding to cover up to 50% of accredited training costs. While this 50% contribution provides significant support, a new pilot programme specifically targeting AI skills offers an even more generous funding model.
For eligible courses, the Welsh Government will provide a 75% contribution to training costs, meaning employers are only required to pay the remaining 25%. This support is designed to help businesses gain a better understanding of AI and build expertise in areas like use cases, machine learning, data science, and AI ethics.
As Skills Minister Jack Sargeant noted: “Our hugely successful Flexible Skills Programme is already benefitting thousands of businesses across Wales and this latest £1 million of funding will bridge digital skills gaps and accelerate the ethical and responsible adoption of AI in a rapidly evolving digital economy.”
