Transport for Wales Hits 1.5 Million Pay As You Go Journeys Milestone – A Fintech-Driven Transformation in Public Transport

More than 1.5 million journeys have now been made using Transport for Wales’ (TfW) Pay As You Go (PAYG) rail technology, marking a significant milestone in the digital transformation of public transport in Wales.

Launched in November 2024, the tap on, tap off system has become TfW’s fastest growing rail product to date. The success of the initiative reflects the growing demand for seamless, digital-first travel experiences—and highlights the integral role of fintech innovation in driving accessible, efficient public services.

TfW is the first train operator outside of London and the South East to implement a contactless PAYG solution across its network. The system is currently operational across 95 stations as part of the broader South Wales Metro project.

With an £800 million investment being made in brand-new trains across the Wales and Borders network, TfW has confirmed that PAYG ticketing will expand to Network North Wales in 2026.

“It’s fantastic news that so many people have been benefiting from quick, simple and cost-effective fares through TfW’s pay as you go service. Those journeys were made possible as a result of our £800 million investment, which makes it easier for people to use public transport and experience new trains.

With the introduction of PAYG across North Wales coming soon, I’m pleased even more people will be able to benefit from flexible and affordable travel across Wales.”

— Ken Skates, Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales

“With over 1.5 million journeys been made, Pay As You Go is our fastest growing rail product and we’re really excited to be expanding it to Network North Wales next year.

At TfW our focus has always been to improve the customer experience, and tap on, tap off ticketing and brand-new trains are having a positive impact on our customers and revenue.”

— Alexia Course, Chief Commercial Officer at TfW

This milestone showcases how digital payment innovation—underpinned by fintech infrastructure—is redefining how customers interact with essential services. As Wales continues to embrace a digital-first transport ecosystem, initiatives like PAYG stand as powerful examples of how fintech can deliver everyday impact, reduce barriers to access, and drive sustainable growth across the region.
