Showcasing Welsh Fintech to the World: Guest Editing Cardiff Life Business Magazine
Being invited to guest edit the February edition of Cardiff Life Business magazine is a real honour, and one I’ve approached with equal parts pride and responsibility.
As CEO of FinTech Wales, I genuinely do have the best job in the world. Every day I get a front-row seat to the innovation, ambition and collaboration happening across Wales’ fintech, finance and wider tech ecosystem. What this magazine has allowed me to do is open up that view to people that may not already know about the sector in Wales, and hopefully shine a light on just how globally relevant, human and impactful Welsh tech has become.
From Wales to the World
A clear theme running through this edition is leadership – not just locally, but globally. Wales is no longer an “emerging” tech ecosystem quietly finding its feet. Welsh-founded and Welsh-based companies are shaping the future of online payments, insurtech, digital wallets, healthtech and sustainability at an international level.
From global payment platforms and medical innovations transforming cancer treatment, to technology redefining how we manage money, property and compliance, the stories in this issue show that world-leading solutions don’t have to come from the biggest cities or the loudest markets. They can – and do – come from Wales.
Founders at the Heart of the Story
Another thread I was keen to spotlight is the founder journey, in all its honesty.
The Founder Special sections go beyond growth headlines and funding announcements. They explore what it really takes to build a business: working backwards from the life you want to lead, navigating uncertainty, knowing when to pivot, and having open conversations about the mental load of leadership.
This openness is one of the things I admire most about the Welsh tech community. Founders here share lessons generously, support one another through challenges, and are refreshingly honest about the realities of building something meaningful. The FinTech Wales Foundry Class of 2025 is a brilliant example of that collaborative spirit in action.
Cardiff – a Window into Wales
Given this is Cardiff Life, it’s right that Cardiff takes centre stage in these pages.
The city continues to play a vital role in Wales’ fintech and tech story, offering a strong base for founders and scale-ups across fintech, insurtech and beyond. Its talent, connectivity and collaborative culture make it a compelling place to build and grow.
But Cardiff’s story is best understood as a window into something much bigger.
The innovation featured in this magazine is powered by a pan-Wales ecosystem – one that stretches across cities, towns and communities throughout the country. At FinTech Wales, we see businesses building in every corner of Wales, collaborating across regions, and scaling nationally and globally. Cardiff may be the focal point here, but the ambition, talent and impact extend far beyond any single city.
Technology with Purpose
Perhaps most importantly, this issue reflects something I feel passionately about: technology as a force for good.
Across the Welsh Tech and Money Matters features, we see businesses helping people manage their money better, live more sustainably, improve wellbeing at work, support carers and families, and reduce environmental impact.
This is innovation with purpose – systems that improve everyday lives and help build a more inclusive, resilient future. Not tech for tech’s sake, but solutions grounded in real human need.
A Community Worth Celebrating
If there’s one thing I hope readers take away from this edition, it’s a sense of just how special this ecosystem is.
Finance and technology might not fascinate everyone at first glance, but when you see the people behind the products, the problems being solved, and the global impact being driven from Wales, it becomes something far more relatable.
This magazine offers just a snapshot of what’s happening across Welsh tech right now. If it sparks curiosity, pride or a desire to get involved, then it’s done its job. The FinTech Wales community is open, collaborative and growing – and there’s a place in it for everyone who wants to help shape what comes next.
I’m hugely grateful to Cardiff Life for the opportunity to tell these stories – and even more grateful to the founders, leaders and teams across Wales who are creating them every day.
