Principality and OneBanx Launch Their First North Wales Cash Kiosk to Improve Cash Access for Welsh Communities

Principality Building Society is enhancing access to cash in Buckley, Flintshire, with the launch of a OneBanx cash kiosk—their first in North Wales. This initiative follows the success of similar installations in Cowbridge and Caerphilly, reaffirming Principality’s commitment to maintaining accessible financial services in Welsh communities.

Addressing a Community Need

Buckley has been without a high street bank since 2019, when the last branch in the area closed its doors. In response, local councillor Carolyn Preece launched a petition that gathered over 100,000 signatures, highlighting the critical need for in-person banking services.

The upcoming installation of a OneBanx terminal at Buckley Library in early 2025 is the result of ongoing collaboration between Principality Building Society, OneBanx, Flintshire County Council, and local representatives.

What is OneBanx?

OneBanx is an innovative shared banking solution that allows customers from all major UK banks and building societies to deposit and withdraw cash without needing a bank card. Transactions are free of charge, and the service is available in both Welsh and English.

The initiative is part of a wider effort to provide alternative banking solutions for communities affected by bank closures, ensuring that individuals and small businesses can continue to access essential financial services.

A Milestone for Buckley

Local leaders have praised the initiative for bringing vital financial services back to the community.

Jack Sargeant, Member of the Senedd for Alyn and Deeside, said:

“This is great news for Buckley. From the moment I approached Principality to ask them to locate a site here, I knew they shared my passion for bringing back banking to the community. This partnership ensures that businesses and residents can access cash services where they live and work.”

Vicky Wales, Chief Customer Officer at Principality Building Society, said:

“Our Members have told us that access to cash plays a vital role in their lives. Retaining critical services on the high street instills confidence in our customers and the communities we proudly serve. In areas impacted by recent bank closures, the OneBanx service—combined with our branch presence—empowers local residents and businesses to manage their finances effectively.”

Commitment to Financial Inclusion

With this latest installation, Principality and OneBanx continue to expand their strategic partnership, ensuring financial accessibility remains a priority. OneBanx has already deployed similar kiosks in Scotland, the North East of England, and the East Midlands—and now, this technology is making a significant impact in Wales.

Javed Anjum, CEO of OneBanx, said:

“We are pleased to expand our strategic partnership with Principality Building Society, supporting their commitment to their Members. OneBanx bridges the gap between those who rely on bank branches for cash transactions and the convenience of digital banking.”

A Step Forward for Welsh Fintech and Community Banking

The introduction of OneBanx in Buckley is another step forward in reshaping financial services across Wales, ensuring inclusive, tech-driven solutions for communities that need them most.

As fintech innovation continues to evolve, partnerships like this showcase how technology, banking, and community support can come together to deliver practical solutions for real-world financial challenges.
