Powering Cardiff’s Digital Future: Elevate Launches Hypercity Fibre Network

  • News

On Tuesday 13th May, industry leaders, policymakers, and members of the Welsh tech community gathered at the Everyman Cinema in Cardiff Bay to mark the arrival of the Cardiff Hypercity Fibre Network — a transformative digital infrastructure project spearheaded by Elevate, in collaboration with Cardiff Council and the Welsh Government.

A Game-Changing Investment in Cardiff’s Connectivity

Until recently, parts of Cardiff — including key commercial hubs — were still reliant on outdated copper-based infrastructure. Many businesses in central areas had no access to superfast broadband and were instead limited to slow ADSL connections, with few alternatives beyond costly leased lines.

The Cardiff HypercityFibre Network has been developed to address this challenge head-on. Thanks to a £7.7 million investment secured by Cardiff Council, and delivered by Elevate and its partners such as Flotek Group, Triangle Networks and Team Metalogic, the city now benefits from a full-fibre network offering gigabit speeds.

Delivering Both Economic and Social Value

This isn’t just a commercial infrastructure project — it’s a strategic investment in Cardiff’s future. The new network supports over 5,000 businesses and 4,000 homes, ensuring that previously underserved areas now benefit from affordable, high-speed connectivity.

And crucially, the project was designed with social value at its heart:

  • 15 community sites across the city have been gifted free gigabit-speed internet for life, supporting a wide range of local needs and ensuring long-term impact.

  • A social tariff offers low-cost internet for residents receiving various benefits, helping to make connectivity more affordable and inclusive.

  • The new network links local businesses to national and global opportunities, boosting productivity, job creation, and inward investment.

“Strong internet infrastructure helps businesses operate effectively and efficiently. It attracts new clients, talent, and investment — and supports growth and innovation in our economic development fields.” –  Elliott Mueller, CEO of Elevate.

Infrastructure That Attracts Growth

The new fibre network spans 170 kilometres across Cardiff, creating a foundation for future-proof connectivity. With a focus on accessibility and speed, the infrastructure enables rapid deployment in pre-connected commercial buildings — allowing businesses to get online quickly with minimal disruption. This investment helps eliminate long-standing digital inequalities across the city, opening up opportunities for growth, innovation, and more equitable access to digital services.

Whether you’re a scaling startup, a national firm, or a community organisation, the Cardiff Hypercity Fibre Network brings a new era of connectivity — where economic ambition and digital inclusion go hand in hand.
