Monmouthshire Building Society teams take on peaks and paddles for St David’s Hospice Care

Two Monmouthshire Building Society teams are taking on a Dragon Boat Race and the Welsh Three Peaks Challenge as part of a fundraising drive for the Society’s charity partner, St David’s Hospice Care.

Colleagues from across Monmouthshire Building Society are going head-to-head in a friendly fundraising competition to see which team can raise the most money for St David’s Hospice Care, as part of the Society’s year-long charity campaign.

First to take on the challenge are the aptly named Mon BS Savings Slayers, a team made up of colleagues from across the Society who will participate in the Hospice’s Dragon Boat Race at Llandegfedd Lake on 27 June.

Combining teamwork, stamina and determination, Adam Grey, Beata Michaliszyn-Wasiak, Clare Brown, Gareth Downward, Hristina Winstanley, Katalin Klein, Kristy Maloney, Marli Miller, Mat Llewelyn, Mel Barts and Richard Connor will take to the water in a bid to raise funds for the charity.

The race will see teams compete over a 250m course, with prizes awarded for first, second and third place, as well as best dressed and best team name. A wooden spoon will also be awarded to the team finishing last.

The Mon BS Savings Slayers have set themselves a fundraising target of £1,000 ahead of the event, although donations will continue to be welcomed afterwards.

In July, a second fundraising team from Monmouthshire Building Society will lace up their walking boots as four members of the Society’s Senior Leadership and Executive teams take on the Welsh Three Peaks Challenge.

Will Carroll, Julian Bill, Martyn Jenkins and Richard Thomas will walk Pen y Fan, Sugar Loaf and Twmbarlwm within 10 hours, supported and driven by Iestyn Evans, to raise money for the Society’s headline charity partner.

The team has set a sponsorship target of £800 and, like their Dragon Boat Race colleagues, is encouraging donations before, during and after the challenge.

Kristy Maloney, Head of Savings at Monmouthshire Building Society and a member of the Mon BS Savings Slayers team, said:

“We have had such a great time preparing and training for the Dragon Boat Race and it’s so wonderful to get different people from around the Society to take part in these challenges.

“Adding a bit of internal competition, has also helped with our fundraising efforts. It’s been such great fun seeing the Peaks team doing all they can to drum up donations – while we do the same for our challenge. It’s all for a wonderful cause, so let the donating commence.”

Supporters can back their preferred team by making a donation through Monmouthshire Building Society’s fundraising campaign. Donors are asked to use the code DBR for the Dragon Boat Race team or SLT for the Senior Leadership Team when making their contribution.

Monmouthshire Building Society has been serving its members for more than 150 years and operates across England and Wales, with branches and agencies throughout South Wales and the South West of England.
