FinTech Wales member Dr. James Useghan receives global recognition for innovation and leadership
FinTech Wales member Dr. James Oweikimi Useghan has received international recognition for his contributions to entrepreneurship, innovation and peacebuilding, with honours awarded at a global leadership gathering in Rwanda.
Dr. Useghan was conferred with an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Honoris Causa, by Eagleversity Royal Professional University, USA. He was also appointed a United Nations Ambassador of Peace by the Global Council for Peace Ambassadors (GCPA), USA.
The honours recognise his work in entrepreneurship, leadership and social impact, as well as his commitment to promoting unity, innovation and collaboration.
As Chief Executive Officer of Alerte Universal Limited, Dr. Useghan has worked at the intersection of technology, social impact and leadership development. His work includes the Alerte app, a fintech developed in Wales, which provides real-time emergency response solutions in the United Kingdom and Nigeria.
The application is designed to improve public safety through real-time location sharing, AI-driven safety recommendations and seamless communication during emergencies, enabling users to quickly alert contacts and emergency responders in critical situations.
The international event brought together global leaders, professionals and development advocates to explore dialogue on enterprise, innovation and global opportunity. Delegates gathered in Rwanda to exchange ideas, build partnerships and strengthen networks that can support economic and social progress across continents.
During the gathering, Dr. Mathias Akinlade, Chairman of Famous Consulting Limited, Rwanda, welcomed participants and described Rwanda as a symbol of resilience, innovation and visionary leadership.
“Distinguished delegates, it is my great pleasure to welcome you to the international gathering here in the remarkable nation of Rwanda. Rwanda stands today as a symbol of resilience, innovation and visionary leadership. It is therefore fitting that we convene here to discuss leadership, enterprise and global opportunity.”
He said the conference was designed to empower professionals and organisations through executive education, international collaboration and strategic business solutions.
“This conference is not just an event. It is a platform for partnerships, transformation, and cross-border growth. Over the coming sessions, we will exchange ideas, strengthen alliances, and unlock new opportunities that position Africa confidently on the global stage.”
Later, during the award dinner ceremony, Akinlade said the awards represented more than recognition of past achievements.
“Today, we celebrate more than achievement, we celebrate awareness. Awareness of purpose, awareness of responsibility, and awareness that excellence is not accidental but intentional.”
He added:
“But this award is not a destination. It is a declaration, more innovation, more integrity, and more contribution. The world does not reward titles; it rewards transformation. Your industries need your courage. Your communities need your leadership.”
The honorary doctorate was awarded in recognition of Dr. Useghan’s achievements, professional excellence and contributions to society.
In addition to the doctorate and peace appointment, the John Maxwell Team congratulated Dr. Useghan for completing a 13-week mastermind study programme based on John C. Maxwell’s The 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth, which focuses on intentional personal development and leadership transformation.
Responding to the honours, Dr. Useghan described the recognition as both humbling and motivating.
“I am deeply humbled to receive this prestigious honorary degree from Eagleversity Royal Professional University, United States of America, and the esteemed United Nations Peace Ambassador Award. I accept this recognition not just on my own behalf but on behalf of all those who have supported and inspired me throughout my journey.”
He said his work as CEO is driven by a commitment to using technology as a tool for social impact and peace promotion.
“Our Alerte app is a testament to this commitment. It provides real-time emergency response solutions in the United Kingdom and Nigeria.”
The technology enables users to share their location instantly and connect with emergency contacts and responders, helping to reduce delays in critical situations and improve outcomes during emergencies.
Dr. Useghan said innovation must focus on solving real-world problems as well as achieving commercial success.
“This award reminds me that our work is not done in isolation. I am grateful to our partners and the communities we serve. Your support and impact drive us to keep pushing boundaries.”
As a newly appointed United Nations Peace Ambassador, he also pledged to continue advocating for inclusive development and social justice.
“I pledge to amplify the voices of the marginalized and promote sustainable development. I will continue to collaborate with governments, organisations, and individuals to create a safer and more equitable world.”
He also encouraged young people to pursue bold ideas and believe in their ability to make a difference.
“To the youth, I say your ideas, passion, and determination can change the world. Never underestimate the power of your voice and your actions.”
Dr. Useghan holds a master’s degree in Project Management from the University of South Wales and another in Public Administration from the National Open University of Nigeria.
With these latest international honours, Dr. James Useghan continues to build his profile as an entrepreneur and advocate for innovation, leadership and peace.
