FinTech Wales Congratulates on Rhun ap Iorwerth Becoming First Minister of Wales

We would like to congratulate Rhun ap Iorwerth on becoming First Minister of Wales following the election results on 7 May.

We welcome Plaid Cymru’s focus on unlocking Wales’ economic potential by placing digital innovation, technology and skills at the heart of future growth. This closely aligns with the priorities of Wales’ fintech ecosystem and the wider ambition to build a stronger, more competitive digital economy.

Wales has a significant opportunity to strengthen its position as a hub for fintech, AI, cyber security, data, payments, regtech and other emerging technologies. These sectors can attract investment, improve productivity, create high-value jobs and support Welsh businesses to scale internationally.

We are encouraged by the emphasis on future-ready skills and stronger links between education, universities and employers. Talent is critical to the growth of fintech and the wider digital economy, and Wales has an opportunity to create clearer pathways for graduates, career changers and experienced professionals into high-skilled technology roles.

The ambition to create economic opportunities across all parts of Wales is particularly important. This is an area FinTech Wales is already working to advance, by supporting a thriving fintech and digital technology sector that can contribute to regional growth, attract investment and ensure communities across Wales benefit from the transition to a modern, innovation-led economy.

As AI and emerging technologies continue to reshape the economy, Wales has an opportunity to lead in responsible, practical and inclusive technology adoption. By supporting innovation across both the public and private sectors, Wales can improve services, strengthen businesses and build long-term economic resilience.
