Stephen, Aaron and Asan have graduated from the FinTech Wales Community Academy, a six-month rotational work experience programme that gave learners hands-on exposure to multiple employers.

The academy set out to widen access to careers in the sector, opening doors and breaking down barriers for people considering a future in Welsh fintech and financial services. It was supported by the team at ACT Ltd and by Jobs Growth Wales+ funding.

How the academy worked

Through the rotational programme, learners built real digital and business skills and raised their aspirations for future careers.

The organisations involved included Monmouthshire Building Society, Hodge, Creditsafe and Final Rentals. Rhys Griffiths, Relationship Manager at FinTech Wales, was credited with driving the project.

Experience across the sector

Commenting on Monmouthshire Building Society’s involvement, Katrina Stewart said: “It has been fantastic to be one of the hosts for the FinTech Wales Academy, working in collaboration with fellow organisations… to provide young adults with valuable work experience and an insight into careers across the financial sector.”

She added: “It was a fantastic opportunity to welcome participants to Monmouthshire Building Society, introducing them to our Society, our history and what we do and showcase the wide range of roles available in financial services, helping them see how their interests, strengths and studies could connect to an exciting future career.”

Hodge said it was “beyond proud to have had the chance to support the Community Academy”. Laura Alexander gave a “huge shout out to Luke Barton for running with this at Hodge HQ with Liam Wharmby”, and Rhys thanked Laura, Luke and Liam for “the time and thought you all put into this and for bringing the world of data to life”.

Opening doors to the sector

The academy focused on widening access and inspiring future talent. It showed what’s possible when industry collaborates with training partners to create inclusive experiences in the fintech sector.

ACT Ltd praised the learners for putting so much effort, enthusiasm and commitment into the project. FinTech Wales is also pleased that one of the learners has just started a foundation year in computer science at university.
