University of South Wales Launches New Programme to Boost Fintech Innovation Across Wales

Wales continues to cement its reputation as a leading fintech hub, with dynamic startups and scale‑ups accelerating digital transformation across the financial services sector. Now, a new initiative from University of South Wales (USW) aims to further unlock innovation and drive commercial growth within the sector.

The Partnership and Engagement Programme (PEP) 2025–2026, funded by Medr, offers a streamlined opportunity for businesses to collaborate with USW academic experts. Designed to support research and development, commercial scoping, and feasibility studies, the scheme enables companies to explore new markets, validate ideas, and access academic expertise at no cost.

Tailored Support for Fintech Innovation

Fintech companies working on technologies such as AI-powered finance tools, payment platforms, or cybersecurity solutions can use PEP to fast-track their R&D. The programme offers:

  • Up to £1,250 in funding per application
  • Up to 20 hours of academic consultation
  • Access to university expertise across faculties
  • Opportunities to develop new products, services or processes and to access follow‑on funding pathways.

The goal is clear: support Welsh fintechs in exploring new commercial opportunities, increasing revenue streams, and leveraging academic insight for real-world impact.

The PEP is intentionally simple and flexible, allowing academic leads and business partners to co-develop applications online. Key benefits include:

  • Free access for the business to initial feasibility support.
  • Scoping of new commercial CPD aligned with industry needs.
  • Access to USW’s technical facilities and potential equipment hire or contract research.
  • Opportunities for academic and industry collaboration
  • Validate or refine a concept before full‑scale investment.
  • Explore new markets or revenue streams with academic guidance.

Outcomes That Matter

The partnership aims to enable at least one of the following outcomes:

  • A potential pathway to a new product, service or process that supports economic and business growth in Wales.
  • Development of an academic/industry collaboration or contract research opportunity.
  • Scoping and development of new commercial CPD meeting industry requirements.
  • Increased use of USW’s facilities and/or equipment hire.
