Mazuma’s Lucy Cohen Nominated for Prestigious St David Award in Business

Lucy Cohen, co-founder of Mazuma, has been nominated for the St David Award in the Business category, a prestigious honour from the Welsh Government recognising outstanding contributions to Wales.

A Trailblazer in Accountancy

At just 23, Lucy co-founded Mazuma, introducing the UK’s first subscription-based accountancy service. What began as an innovative approach to simplifying accounting has since evolved into a multi-million-pound company, creating jobs across Wales and beyond.

Lucy’s inspiration stemmed from her personal experiences—growing up in a family working in the creative industries, she witnessed firsthand the challenges of navigating the tax system. This motivated her to break down financial barriers and champion social mobility, a mission she has pursued for over 22 years.

Notable Achievements

Lucy’s contributions span across finance, literature, and social change. Some of her key achievements include:

  • 📌 Vice President of AAT (2024)
  • 📌 Best Short Business Book Award for Forget the First Million (2022)
  • 📌 Outstanding Contribution Award – Accounting Excellence Awards (2021)
  • 📌 Led a successful campaign for better pain relief in women’s healthcare, resulting in policy changes

Lucy’s Reaction

“Well. This was totally unexpected! 😱

Last night I had an invite to the Senedd, where it turns out that I am a finalist for a St David Award.

These awards are an annual award which recognises exceptional achievements by Welsh citizens – and are the highest accolade that the Welsh Government confers on its civilians.

I have absolutely no idea who nominated me (or why!) but I am overwhelmed.

Day to day when you’re running a business you’re just getting on with the task at hand. It’s rare I think about what impact that makes beyond my immediate line of sight. To think that I might have done something that has improved Wales as a country has blown my mind.

Anyway. Thank you to whoever it was who nominated me, and to Eluned Morgan, the First Minister of Wales, for your hospitality last night.”

Recognising Welsh Excellence

The St David Awards celebrate exceptional individuals in categories such as Business, Science, Public Service, Community Impact, and more. Winners are selected by the First Minister of Wales and their advisers, with the final announcement set for 27 March 2025.

Lucy’s nomination highlights her dedication to innovation, equality, and financial empowerment, making a significant impact on Welsh businesses and beyond.
